The Committee considered an update on the petition and, given the ongoing work and focus on this issue outlined by the Older People’s Commissioner, the Committee agreed to close the petition and thank the petitioner for their work to research and highlight this important need.

 

In doing so the Committee agreed to write to the Welsh Government to highlight that work is needed, especially given the current circumstances to ensure that the group of vulnerable people affected by this issue have access to the information they need to keep them safe in light of ongoing levels of digital exclusion.

The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to write to the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales to ask her what more that she thinks should be done by the Welsh Government to increase support for older people experiencing domestic abuse.

The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to write to the Deputy Minister and Chief Whip to:

·         request that her officials engage directly with the petitioners on the points they raise in relation to the detail of professional training and guidance, and how services can better reflect the needs of older people experiencing domestic abuse; and

·         ask what proportion of funding is allocated for outreach services, which can be accessed by older people, and whether these services are available in all parts of Wales.

The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to write back to the Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services to:

·         seek a response to issues raised by the petitioners and the Older People’s Commissioner, including around training for professionals and the call for a national action plan;

·         ask how the Welsh Government intends to support the work being taken forward by the Older People’s Commissioner; and

·         ask for guidance to be issued to relevant organisations in relation to the use of inclusive imagery in materials promoting domestic abuse services.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to:

·         write back to the Deputy Minister and Chief Whip to:

o   provide the detailed comments provided by the petitioners;

o   seek a further response to the issues raised, in particular the concerns that older people’s experiences are often not covered by domestic abuse services or material; and

o   ask the Deputy Minister what provisions are in place for older men experiencing such abuse; and

·         write to the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales to seek her response to the issues raised in the petition and ask her to share further information about the work she intends to carry out to prevent the abuse of older people.
