The Committee agreed to close the petition in light of the work of the Welsh Youth Parliament on this subject, and to encourage the petitioner to engage with the Youth Parliament as part of their ongoing work.

The Committee considered further correspondence and agreed to make the Welsh Youth Parliament aware of the petition in to the context of the work they are taking forward on Life Skills in the Curriculum. The Committee agreed to await their findings before considering further action on the petition.

The Committee considered the petition alongside P-05-861 Make political education a compulsory element of the new national curriculum and agreed to write back to the Minister for Education to ask:

·         for an interim solution to be put in place, either through the current PSE curriculum or the Welsh Baccalaureate, to support young people who might be voting for the first time in 2021; and

·         for consideration to be given to other ways young people can access information in relation to political education outside the school curriculum, for example through youth work settings.

The Committee considered correspondence from the Minister for Education on this petition and P-05-861 Make political education a compulsory element of the new national curriculum, and agreed to await the views of the petitioners on the further information provided by the Minister for Education before deciding whether it can take any further action on the petitions.

The Committee considered the petition for the first time and agreed to:

·         write a combined letter in relation to this petition and P-05-861 to the Minister for Education to query whether it is possible to begin to implement improvements to the teaching of life skills to pupils in schools ahead of the full implementation of the new curriculum by 2022, and how, in the context of providing flexibility to professionals, the Government intends to ensure that pupils receive sufficient grounding in life skills during their education; and

·         await a response from the petitioners to the correspondence received from the Welsh Government before considering whether to take further actions on the petition.
