Sepsis
Inquiry5
The
Health, Social Care and Sport
Committee held an inquiry into
sepsis.
In
January 2021, the Committee
considered its work programme for the remainder of this Senedd and
agreed that given the limited time remaining, it will continue to focus on its
inquiry into the impact of the Covid-19
outbreak, and its management, on health and social care in Wales.
Unfortunately, this meant that the Committee was unable to continue its work
into sepsis. The Committee agreed to
highlight in its legacy report the work already undertaken, with a strong
recommendation that its successor committee recommences this inquiry at the
first available opportunity in the Sixth Senedd. The Committee would like to
thank everyone who has taken the time to contribute their views to this
inquiry.
Background
Sepsis
has been described as one of the most common but least recognised illnesses in
both the developed and developing world. It is a life-threatening condition
that arises when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues
and organs. If not recognised early and treated promptly, sepsis can lead to
multiple organ failure and death.
Terms
of reference
The
terms of reference for the Committee’s inquiry were:
- What understanding there is about sepsis
incidence, how sepsis is presenting to services, and outcomes from sepsis.
- Public and professional awareness of
sepsis.
- Identification and management of sepsis
in out-of-hospital settings, including use of relevant screening
tools/guidance, and the referral process between primary/secondary care.
- Identification/management of sepsis in
acute (hospital) settings.
- The physical and mental impact on those
who have survived sepsis, and their needs for support.
