On 17 January 2019 the Welsh Government published its draft Healthy Weight: Healthy Wales strategy for consultation. The draft strategy seeks to prevent and reduce obesity in Wales. The consultation will close on 12 April 2019.
The Children, Young People and Education Committee has decided to consider the draft strategy from a children and young people’s perspective. The Committee does not intend to duplicate the Welsh Government’s consultation; rather, its aim is to ensure that, at this early stage in the development of an all-age policy, the specific needs of children and young people will be met.
The Committee will engage directly with a small group of relevant stakeholders, inviting them to discuss the detail of the draft strategy as it relates to children and young people as part of an informal roundtable session. Issues identified by the stakeholders and Members will be put to the Chief Medical Officer in a public session.
The information gathered will be used to inform any written output the Committee may choose to submit for the Welsh Government’s consideration as part of its policy development and implementation in this area.
Given the relevance of this work to the remit of the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee, an open invitation has been extended to its members to participate in this work.
