Introductions, apologies, substitutions and declarations of interest

Minutes:

1.1 The Chair welcomed Members to the first meeting of the Sixth Senedd’s Children, Young People and Education Committee.

1.2 In accordance with Standing Order 34.19, the Chair stated that she had determined that the public were excluded from the Committee’s meeting in order to protect public health but that the meeting would be broadcast live on www.senedd.tv

1.3 The Chair stated that if for any reason she dropped out of the meeting, the Committee agreed that Ken Skates MS would become Temporary Chair in accordance with Standing Order 17.22.

1.4 There were no apologies nor declarations of interest.

Motion under Standing Order 17.42(ix) to resolve to exclude the public from the meeting for the remainder of the meeting

Committee procedures and ways of working

Minutes:

5.1 Members noted the Standing Orders which govern committee business and the resources available to support the Committee in its work.

5.2 Members discussed and agreed an initial approach to:

- The organisation of business, including meeting times and formats.

- Training and development opportunities.

- Committee briefings and language preferences.

Strategic approach to Committee remit

Minutes:

6.1 Members agreed to undertake activity in the autumn term to develop and adopt a strategic approach to committee work.

6.2 Members noted the importance of:

- Ensuring that the voices of children and young people were heard in committee work.

- Pursuing opportunities to work jointly with other committees, where appropriate.

7.

Early Committee activity

Minutes:

7.1 Members agreed to launch a stakeholder consultation over the summer inviting views on what the committee’s priorities should be, to inform its strategic plan and longer term work programming. The closing date would be after the school holidays allowing opportunity for people within school settings to contribute.

7.2 Member also agreed to conduct tailored engagement activity with children and young people in the autumn term, to seek their views on priorities for the Sixth Senedd.

7.3 Members discussed and agreed to invite the Minister for Education and the Minister/Deputy Ministers for Health to the first meeting of the autumn term, to discuss their priorities. Members noted the need to liaise with the Health and Social Care Committee to avoid any clashes caused by the committee timetable. A written paper would be sought in advance to inform the session.

7.4 Members agreed to publish a headline work programme on a rolling basis.
